The syringe, which is already facing a global shortage, faces a different crisis in Faridabad. According to industry representatives, the closure of the syringe factory in Faridabad driven by NCR pollution may affect the country's Covid-19 vaccination plan.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Rajiv Nath, Managing Director of Hindustan Syringe and Medical Devices Co., Ltd. urged that syringe manufacturing facilities be allowed to operate in accordance with the National Disaster Management Act to avoid a “national healthcare crisis”. Nath is also the forum coordinator of the Indian Medical Device Industry Association.

Hindustan Syringe and Medical Device Company (HMD), the country’s largest syringe and needle manufacturing company, and more than 228 large factories in Faridabad, have been required to “voluntarily” close their factories as a pollution control action carried out by the authorities Part of Nath said in the National Capital Region (NCR). HMD alone contributes to more than 66% of India's supply of syringes for therapeutic healthcare and immunization.

Nath said: “In this place, HMD produces 150,000 needles and 8 million syringes every day. This has stopped. Since we cannot exceed our two-day buffer stock from Monday, other factories supported by the parent unit will be closed. The country will not be able to supply 1.2 million syringes every day. The closure of needle and syringe manufacturing plants will cause a disruption in the supply chain, which may affect the entire country’s healthcare services, especially the Covid-19 vaccination program, leading to severe shortages and other related issues problem."

According to him, most of HMD's factories use environmentally friendly pipeline natural gas (PNG) to operate.

"We have self-generated power generation based on PNG. We do have spare diesel generator sets, but they are rarely used because we have PNG which is cheaper and pollution-free. We are not a polluting industry, and one of our factories has just received the green building gold certification To meet sustainable development standards."
