Using circulating tumor cells in the blood to improve cancer diagnosis

Analysis of circulating tumor cells (CTC) from the blood is an attractive alternative to invasive and painful biopsy for cancer diagnosis. However, their low abundance, blood cell contamination and cell death during purification have created obstacles for the successful clinical adoption of this technology. In order to circumvent these problems, researchers turned to single-cell technology to enrich CTC from the blood and determine tumor characteristics.
