The Academic Medical Center (AZP) in Paramaribo, Suriname has successfully studied an effective method to collect COVID-19 antibody-containing plasma from recovered Covid-19 patients to treat critically ill patients. In contrast to popular plasma donation strategies, academic medical centers collect plasma from recovered patients before they are discharged from the hospital. In the early stages of the recovery process, the antibody titer is ten times higher than in the later stages of recovery. Preliminary data shows that both patients whose condition has deteriorated to a critical condition or patients who have recently received ventilator support have achieved excellent results. The innovative Dutch blood filter HemoClear supports plasma donation and plasma preparation. In a sterile, simple and cost-effective procedure, the filter separates plasma from red blood cells. The plasma is processed to treat multiple COVID-19 patients, and red blood cells are being or may be reinjected into the donor rather than hindering further recovery. AZP anesthesiologist Dr. Rosita Bihariesingh stated that “the results are very promising, and the procedure cost and procedure workload are much lower than the available alternatives. We are now waiting for approval to expand the patient group in our study”. Vincent Franssen, CEO of HemoClear, confirmed the growing interest in the Suriname method "African and South American national authorities are waiting for the approval of several studies using the Suriname method, and HemoClear is proud to support these countries in the fight against COVID-19." About HemoClear BV At HemoClear, our mission is to create innovative medical devices for patients in need. Our pipeline focuses on serious or life-threatening diseases and has limited available or affordable treatment options. All the devices we are developing are related to the use of blood and blood components. The sterile HemoClear filter was developed to capture red blood cells (RBC) from the blood flowing out of the patient and separate them from the plasma, with a high degree of specificity. After filtration, red blood cells are reinfused (autotransfusion) and the plasma is processed. If the plasma contains COVID-19 antibodies, this valuable plasma will be used to treat critically ill COVID-19 patients.
